Freemasonry symbols on Game of Thrones

WARNING: SPOILER for season 3 of Game of Thrones

HBO’s series Game Of Thrones takes place on a fiction medieval-like world. And therefore, several medieval topics “from real world” are included in the story. Kings, Queens, Lords, fight tournaments and magic swords are part of its scenario.

However, on a closer scanner, there are some interesting topics which are closely related to Freemasonry. Writer of the books “A Song of Ice and Fire”(in which the series is based on), George R. Martin, has not disclosed or suggested a masonic membership, but there are two remarkable “coincidences”.

The most notorious is the character Beric Dondarrion, the “chief” of the Brotherhood Without Banners. When he fights against Sandor Clegane he carries a “Flaming sword”. This is the same “bijou” carried by the Tiler (or the Worshipful Master, depending on the Rite) of a Masonic Lodge.

The flaming sword is an allusion to the flaming sword of the Garden of Eden, used to keep the way of the Tree of Life.

This is the greatest “coincidence” in Game of Thrones related to Freemasonry symbolism. However  there is also a rather indirect coincidence, related to the legend that links Freemasonry with the Knights of the Templar. In Game of Thrones, the “Night’s Watch” is a military order which holds the ice wall against “the others” (the frozen zombies).

In order to be part of the “Night’s Watch” (for men only), neophytes must swear an oath regarding their duties: “I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post”.

Isn’t this a bit too familiar with Knights that protected the wall of Jerusalem against Islam and swore “Non nobis, Domine, sed nomini tuo da gloriam“?
